Dr. McLachlin worked as a research scientist for many years before coming to the University of Arkansas in 1999. She began working as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 1984 at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland where she participated in a team of researchers investigating the use of viruses for human gene therapy. Later, she was hired as a Project Leader in a biotechnology company, Genetic Therapy, Inc. which developed the necessary agents for the first experimental tests of human gene therapy. In 1991 she moved to the University of Georgia to work in an area of applied biotechnology studying insect viruses.

Dr. McLachlin currently advises the Freshman and Sophomore premed students full-time at the University of Arkansas, serves on the Premedical Advisory Committee and teaches Human Physiology. Dr. McLachlin meets with prospective students and their parents and serves as a Faculty Advisor for the premedical honor society, AED. She is also a member of the American Society for Virology; NACADA, the National Academic Advising Association; and NAAHP, the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.
