Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service
Most medical schools but not all in Texas participate in the TMDSAS. This application service is not used by the Baylor College of Medicine see below under AMCAS). Baylor College of Medicine is a private medical school in Texas.

Letters of Evaluation
Unlike AMCAS participating schools where letters are sent to individual schools, letters of evaluation from a the Premedical Advisory Committee and personal letters of recommendation are submitted directly to the TMDSAS.

Programs in Texas that use AMCAS
A completed AMCAS (American Medical College Application Service) form is used by the Baylor College of Medicine and for applicants to the M.D./Ph.D. program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, the Unversity of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
Some facts and figures from the Baylor College of Medicine for the entering class of 2006:
"Baylor received 4,326 applications for the 168 positions in the 2006 entering class. Of those applicants, 631 were interviewed."
"Among the students enrolled in the entering class of 2006, 76 percent were Texas residents and 48 percent were women. All entering students had completed work for the baccalaureate degree."
"The mean college grade point average of students who enrolled in 2006 was 3.80, and the average MCAT score was 33.9."

The recommended courses for medical school admission are meant to be general guideline. Although most U.S. medical schools typically require only 2 courses (8 credit hours) in Biology, it is not unusual for some medical schools to require more than two courses. For example, UT Southwestern medical school and others in Texas require 4 biology courses equivalent to 14 credit hours. UT Southwestern also requires a course in calculus or a math-based statistics class. It is the responsibility of each applicant to determine if the medical schools they are applying to have different requirements from the standard list.
- BIOLOGY
"Two years as required for science majors, one year must include formal laboratoy experience. Minimum of 14 semester credit hours required, 8 for year with lab, and 6 for remainder or 12 lecture hours and two lab hours. Must have grade of C or better.Includes all biology courses applied toward baccalaureate degree in traditional science field.
Includes courses in general biology, zoology, botany, microbiology, genetics, ecology, immunology, parasitology, ornithology, anatomy and physiology, entomology, pathophysiology, marine biology and herpetology. One semester of biochemistry will be accepted toward fulfilling this requirement. Any courses for non-science majors or courses taught for health career majors (nursing, pharmacy or allied health sciences) are not accepted. UT Southwestern strongly recommends taking at least one semester of biochemistry." -
MATHEMATICS
"One-half year of college calculus or statistics, minimum of 3 semester credit hours required. Must have grade of C or better.The calculus course can be any calculus taught by a math or physics department. Business calculus or any pre-calculus courses are not accepted. The statistics course must be math based and preferrably taught in the math department."
