AMCAS

The American Medical College Application Service

AMCAS is a centralized application service provide by the Association of American Medical Colleges. A completed AMCAS (American Medical College Application Service) application is required by most allopathic (M.D.-granting) schools, including the College of Medicine, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock. Some medical schools do not use AMCAS. It is your responsibility to obtain separate application forms from medical schools that do not participate in AMCAS. For information about applying to Schools of Osteopathic Medicine, see AACOMAS below.

How much does it cost to submit an AMCAS application?

You only need to complete one application; AMCAS will send it to the medical schools that you have designated. The initial application fee with AMCAS for one medical school is $160. Additional applications are $30 for each designated medical school. Many schools charge an additional fee at the time the supplemental or "secondary application" is submitted. For instance, UAMS requires a non-refundable fee of $100 at the time the Supplemental Application is submitted.

When do I apply?

Students wishing to apply to medical school begin the application process a year before matriculating. For instance, if you plan on entering medical school in the summer after you graduate ie. summer of 2008, you need to apply BEFORE you enter your senior year (summer of 2007). The relevant dates for the College of Medicine at UAMS are listed in the table below. This also includes the deadline for submission of completed application materials to the Premedical Advisory Committee at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
AMCAS will begin accepting web applications on June 1. AMCAS only provides an on-line application pro, available at: www.amcas.org

What do I do to find out specific information regarding medical school requirements for states other than Arkansas?

The premed advisors, Dr. Neil Allison and Dr. Jeanne McLachlin have detailed information about all U.S. and foreign medical schools. Make an appointment to meet with them. Medical school addresses and other admissions information can also be obtained from the latest edition of the MSAR, "Medical School Admission Requirements" on reserve in the Mullins Library under Premed. The MSAR lists the average GPA and MCAT score of successful applicants, the class size, and the number of out-of-state applicants for all the allopathic medical schools in the U.S. and Canada.
